When Should My Child First Go to the Dentist?
We recommend making an appointment with our team approximately six months after you see your child’s first tooth come in. Usually, this is close to their first birthday. However, if you have any concerns or questions about pediatric oral health before you spot your child’s first tooth, we welcome you to come in sooner for an appointment.
As a parent or guardian, we also want to make sure you’re equipped to help your child get the best start with their oral health. During your child’s first visit we’ll lay out a clear path and plan for you to work with your child as their teeth continue to come in and their mouth changes.
By seeing your child early on in the development of their teeth, we can closely follow their growth and get them on a secure path to lifelong dental health.
What Happens During a Kids’ Dental Appointment?
For your child’s first dental appointment, the team focuses primarily on helping them adjust to being in a dentist’s office and getting comfortable in the chair. Our priority is eliminating any fears of the dentist as early as possible and making hygiene fun.
Next, we examine your child’s mouth and their erupting teeth. If we see anything that could lead to issues further down the line, we’ll discuss it with you and create a potential treatment plan. A professional dental cleaning is included in the first appointment, too.
We will also provide both you and your child with the necessary dental education to maintain a healthy mouth. This includes healthy milestones and warning signs you should watch for as your child’s teeth come in.
We’ll talk to your child directly about the importance of brushing, flossing and eating a healthy diet, in language they understand and that makes sense.
