When Is Crown Lengthening Necessary?

A crown lengthening procedure might be required if you need a restorative dental appliance, like a crown, but the tooth in question is too small or, if below your gum line you have significant tooth decay. In cases like these, we need to reshape your gum, extending the surface of your tooth that’s visible so there is enough room for the appliance to be secured.

The Procedure

Our team is ready to help you undergo a crown lengthening procedure in a quick, and relatively painless manner. This is a very common procedure and usually takes less than an hour. Before the procedure is performed, we’ll fit you for a temporary crown to protect your natural tooth during the process. We treat you with a local anesthetic then we recontour the gums around your affected tooth.

Any minor discomfort you feel after the procedure can be relieved with over-the-counter medicine and an ice pack to the affected area. One to two weeks later, we’ll check your mouth and remove the stitches. Four to six weeks after the procedure, we will thoroughly inspect your teeth and gums with the expectation of clearing you for full restoration.
