The Benefits of Digital X-Rays

We typically take x-rays once a year—during every other dental hygiene appointment. However, this may differ for you, depending on your individual dental situation and treatment plan. We review the x-rays immediately, as part of your visit, then store them in your patient record for future reference.
Intraoral X-Rays vs. Extraoral X-Rays
The most common type of digital x-rays we use are called intraoral x-rays, which means the x-ray film is inside your mouth. To take these, we have you bite down on a safe sensor, then take the picture. This gives us a highly-detailed image of your teeth, gums, and mouth, allowing us to:
- Locate cavities
- Examine the roots of your teeth and the bones in your mouth
- See the overall health of your mouth, teeth, and gums
Extraoral x-rays are captured outside your mouth. We use them to look more broadly at your mouth, teeth and jaw structure. Extraoral x-rays help us:
- Detect the presence of cysts, tumors or oral cancer
- Identify impacted teeth
- Monitor tooth growth and development
- Examine facial bones
- See the teeth and jaw connection
